Maternal stress can spill over and affect children right from prenatal period throughout the child’s developmental age. Today women are facing more stress due to their employment outside and the additional burden of housekeeping and child care with no opportunity for shared responsibility seen in joint families. The additional stress of caring for children can, at times, make parents feel angry, anxious, or just plain “stressed out”. These tensions are inevitable part of family life, but if parents do not know ways to cope with their stress they feel overwhelmed by them. Today’s parents are found to be under severe stress most of the time due to a number of reasons and this could be one of the reasons for the growing stress in children and youth. Hence it will be interesting to know whether there is any relationship with the stress of children and adults particularly that of parents and teachers. The present research study was carried out with an objective to understand the influence of maternal stress on the stress level of school children in Thiruvananthapuram and Abu Dhabi. The results revealed that the stress of children increases with the increase in the stress of their mothers indicating a direct positive relationship.
