Description
Summary:The present study attempts to enquire the roots of the historically formed differentiation in terms of socio-economic development between the northern and southern regions of Kerala in the light of the spatially distinctive social and institutional processes operated in those regions. However, using appropriate OLS and dummy variable models depending upon the Census of India data and relevant spatial information, the study mapped the differential achievement of socio-economic outcomes as well as traced out the fact that the long term legacy of uneven development of the colonial regime have been continued between north and south Kerala even during the post colonial period in terms of access to public goods as well as for selected socio-economic outcomes. However, in most cases, the level of deprivation is multi-layered and have important social manifestations, as the religious groups belonging to the backward regions seems to be more backward than the same groups belonging to the developed regions of south. Moreover, it can be observed that the historical dependence of directly British-ruled Malabar region on maritime trade for building up the economy is manifested in lower development of public infrastructure in the interiors as the dependence of the economy on land revenue was minimal that has serious implications of socio-economic development of the minorities inhabiting in the region. On the other hand, the fruits of social outcomes in the princely states of Cochin and Travancore have not been percolated to the lower social segments due to higher social rigidity of the Hindu society of south. The study, therefore, necessitates the active correlation between the social fragmentations and institutional set up as the key background for the long term legacy in differential levels of development between north and southern Kerala.
